Principal's Message

Kimberly L. Marion
Principal of Stokes Early College

As a middle school Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, I loved creating lessons from history and applying what we learned from the past to a present-day issue. My favorite historical personality is Robert E. Lee, and not because he was a Southern general during the war between the states; rather, because he faced insurmountable odds, and, in the face of those odds, modeled honor, duty and hope to his commanders and troops, as well as everyone he knew. Robert E. Lee said, “It is history that teaches us to hope.”

This brings to mind Erin Gruwell, portrayed in the movie Freedom Writers, and how she used lessons learned from the Holocaust to connect with Long Beach, California, inner-city students. Through a unique approach to instruction -- the freedom to write in personal journals -- Gruwell allowed the students to have a voice in their own education. Our students deserve that voice!
